Take your Lindy Hop to new heights (literally!) in this exciting aerials workshop designed specifically for beginner aerialists. Air steps have been thrilling swing dance crowds ever since Frankie Manning and Frieda Washington stunned the Savoy Ballroom with the very first Lindy Hop air step back in 1935. Since then, these dynamic and gravity-defying moves have become a hallmark of performances, competitions, and late-night jam circles around the world.

In this workshop, you’ll learn fun, achievable aerials with a strong focus on safe and effective technique. Perfect for dancers looking to add a touch of show-stopping flair to their repertoire.

Important Info:

• Bring your own partner – all attendees must register in pairs.

• There will be no partner rotation during aerials classes.

• When choosing a partner, please consider a suitable height/weight ratio — since aerials are dynamic and involve lifting or supporting a flyer’s full body weight, this is crucial for safety and success.

• No prior aerials experience required for Aerials 1. Aerials 2 assumes basic familiarity or prior participation in Aerials 1.

This workshop is suitable for swing dancers with knowledge of the fundamentals of swing dancing - it will be helpful to know how to do a 6-count basic, 8-beat swing out and Jockey (side by side) Charleston. The instructors may give you a dance entry to the aerial assuming knowledge of one of these rhythms.

What to Wear:

• Comfortable, athletic clothing

• Sneakers or other stable, closed-toe dance footwear

• No tank tops for either bases or flyers

• Please remove all watches and dangly jewellery

Workshop Schedule:
10.15am - 12.30pm Aerials 1 – Let’s Get Flying - This session builds a solid foundation in lifting and aerial technique. Learn how to prep, lift, and land safely while working on exciting, beginner-friendly air steps. No aerials experience required.

12.30pm - 1.30pm lunch break

1.30pm - 3.45pm Aerials 2 – Let’s Fly Some More - This session is for those who’ve done Aerials 1 or have previous aerial training. We’ll build on foundational skills to explore more dynamic, performance-ready air steps.
