Event description

In support of the women of Afghanistan

Afghanistan is experiencing a profound humanitarian crisis. With the retreat of United States forces and the collapse of the government, the Taliban has seized control of the country almost 20 years after being ousted by US-led troops, and hundreds of thousands have fled their homes in fear for their lives. As many of us watch on feeling helpless, Amnesty International SA/NT are hosting a film fundraiser along with the support of the Mercury Cinema and the Ghan International Film Festival in the hopes to raise funds and awareness for Afghanistan.

Join us to watch What Tomorrow Brings (2015) which follows one year in the life of the first all-girls school in a remote, conservative Afghan village. The film traces the inter-connected stories of those who bring the school to life: students, teachers, village elders, parents, and school founder Razia Jan. While the girls learn to read and write, their education goes far beyond the classroom to become lessons about tradition and time. They discover their school is the one place they can turn to understand the differences between the lives they were born into and the lives they dream of leading.

Whilst this film came out in 2015 the story plays out at a critical moment in Afghanistan's history, when international security forces were pulling out and the Taliban is increasingly exerting its power as we are seeing today.

Behishta Anwar, member of GIFFA will be speaking about her experience before the film screening.

100% of ticket sales will go to the UN Women Afghanistan Emergency Appeal – UN Women has been present in Afghanistan for over 10 years and will remain operational and engaged with their partners to provide life-saving services to Afghan women and girls especially at this critical juncture for the country.
