Africa Brasil Boorloo
Description
A celebration of the diverse communities that live in Perth.
We, like you, love music so naturally the Title of the event is an ode to África Brasil , a landmark 1976 studio album by Brazilian cultural icon , singer-songwriter and guitarist Jorge Ben Jor (then performing as Jorge Ben). It is widely celebrated as one of the greatest and most influential records in Brazilian music history, representing a definitive moment in the creation of samba-rock and samba-funk.
In the title track, "África Brasil (Zumbi)", Ben reworks an older track to summon the names of African nations torn apart by the slave trade (Angola, Congo, Benguela) and pays tribute to Zumbi dos Palmares, Brazil's legendary 17th-century anti-slavery resistance leader. Brazil celebrates Zumbi day on November 20th.
On Saturday, 21 November , the Celtic Club in West Perth will play host to a cultural festival bridging the rich heritages of Africa and Brazil.
This family-friendly event is suitable for all ages , giving you an immersive look into the traditions of both regions through live performances, interactive sessions and authentic East African & Brazilian flavours by local chefs.
