The Allied Health Academy’s AHP Advanced Practice Collective provides a platform for the continuation of the debate on the different approaches to and perspectives on Advanced Practice for Allied Health professions taking an international approach with key panellists from the UK, New Zealand and Australia.

The global healthcare workforce is facing increasing pressure, including the growing complexity of care, highlighting the urgent need to optimise the scope of practice of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) and develop robust career pathways to maintain their engagement in clinical roles.

This optimisation is crucial for effective workforce planning and transformation of services. Although the potential of the AHPs' scope of practice presents significant opportunities for employers, it remains underused and often misunderstood.

Through collaborative learning, we can leverage innovative practices and better address the needs of AHPs globally. This collaborative approach extends beyond limited geographical boundaries, enhancing our capacity to implement effective solutions across wider areas.

Professor Beverley Harden: "Across each of the four UK nations, progress has been made within advanced practice and we have learnt a lot. The time is right to think ahead with one voice across countries and I suggest across the globe, working with our professional organisations to better illustrate the potential impact of the more specific specialty roles and the potential training pathways building on many of the assets we already have. This is a conversation relevant to UK and international colleagues as we look to roles more specific to the specialties within which we work."

Dr Susan Nancarrow, CEO HealthWork International & The Allied Health Academy.

Susan is an allied health professional, health services researcher, and has held senior executive roles in higher education. Susan has more than twenty years' experience of international health services research, expertise and analysis, with a particular interest in the health workforce, models of health service organisation and delivery, and the sociology of the professions. Susan founded HealthWork International in 2021 to find new and innovative ways to shape the health workforce, to better meet the needs of 21st century health care.

Dr Martin Chadwick, Chief Allied Health Professions Officer within the New Zealand Ministry of Health.

Martin is the Chief Allied Health Professions Officer within the Ministry of Health, working in partnership with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Nursing Office in providing transdisciplinary clinical leadership and advice. The role works at a systems level as well as providing support to clinicians, programmes and projects across the Ministry. He is aligning a work programme around what he describes as the five challenges facing allied health. This includes the challenges of demonstrating the value add of the allied health professions to population health outcomes; and working towards the concept of transdisciplinary working in the provision of healthcare services. Martin was the 2019-20 New Zealand Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice. He has completed his doctoral degree in 2019 examining health workforce change. He is passionate about the untapped potential that allied health professions can bring in improving the quality of care provided to our populations, and in turn better meeting equitable population health needs.

Professor Beverley Harden, Deputy Chief Allied Health Professions Officer for England, and Health Education England’s Allied Health Professions Lead.

In a career spanning more than 30 years, Professor Harden is recognised nationally as an accomplished health service leader with both operational and strategic leadership experience. Professor Harden has led a variety of large multi-professional healthcare services, NHS trust education services, and complex service and workforce transformations across systems. Since 2018, she has led work in her current role across England to enable employers to realise the full workforce potential of the fifteen allied health professions, secure and grow the future workforce, and develop the skilled allied health support, assistant practitioner and technician workforce. In 2021, Professor Harden established the Centre for Advancing Practice to bring together clinical and education experts from across all professions, to develop educational and career pathways for enhanced, advanced and consultant-level practice. This is enabling more highly skilled staff to pursue more inclusive clinical career opportunities as advanced and consultant practitioners.

Dr Ingrid Lensink, Chief Allied and Scientific Health Officer, Department for Health and Wellbeing in South Australia.

Dr Ingrid Lensink has over 20 years’ clinical and research experience in the public health and university sectors and extensive knowledge on workforce reform, having been involved in the development of national health workforce policy and funding while at Health Workforce Australia. A creative problem solver, she successfully implemented innovative outcomes for the statewide education and training portfolio, working in close collaboration with the higher education and public health systems prior to her current role. As a passionate advocate for inclusivity and equity, she is currently a board member for a non-for-profit disability organisation.

Felicity Martin, Senior Director Allied Health at Canberra Health Services (CHS).

Felicity Martin is the Senior Director of Allied Health at Canberra Health Services (CHS), Felicity role includes leading complex allied health teams and workforce transformation. Felicity is working with Allied Health and Nursing colleagues at CHS where she commenced worked on a Multi-professional Advanced Practice Framework. She has established a number of Advanced Practice Allied Health roles and trainee positions leading efficient, accessible and safe models of care. Felicity’s background includes leading the Speech Pathology Team and Quality and Safety leadership roles.
