Intrigued by Artificial Intelligence but unsure where to start?

Maybe you've dabbled with AI tools but wonder how they can fit into your classroom or daily life. This three-session workshop is designed to provide you with the answers and guidance you need. Designed for beginners as well as the casual user.

Session 1- Getting Started With AI
October 16, 2024 7:00 PM- 8:15 PM ET/ 6:00 PM CT/ 5:00 PM MT/ 4:00 PM PT

Presented by Dave Edyburn, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

This session will demystify artificial intelligence, making it accessible to educators. We will explore what AI is, its growing impact in society, and its potential applications in education. We’ll talk about practical steps to start using AI, explore some AI tools like Gemini, ChatPDF, and Canva to explore their costs as well as why, how, and when you might use each. You'll be encouraged to try out an AI tool on your own and/or participate in Session 2.

  • Dr. Dave Edyburn is Senior Research Scientist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Associate Graduate Faculty in the Department of Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas. He has been working in a the learning sciences space to understand the convergence of human and machine learning since 2017.
    Dave has a long history of engagement in CEC: He is a Past President of the Division of Leaders and Legacy as well as the Innovations in Special Education Technology (formerly TAM) Division. He has chaired the TED Audit Committee and Publications Committee. He has also served as Editor of Teaching Exceptional Children.

    Session 2: Hands-On AI Exploration
    October 23, 2024 7:00 PM- 8:15 PM ET/ 6:00 PM CT/ 5:00 PM MT/ 4:00 PM PT

    Optional Session for Tech support

    This optional session is designed for those wanting to give AI a try, but are unsure where to start. Participants will receive step-by-step guidance on finding, accessing, and experimenting with various AI tools. With a focus on practical experience, this hands-on session will equip attendees with the skills to navigate different AI platforms and begin their own exploration.     Session 3: AI for Classroom and College 

    October 30, 2024 7:00 PM- 8:15 PM ET/ 6:00 PM CT/ 5:00 PM MT/ 4:00 PM PT

    Presented by Lisa Dieker, University of Kansas

    This session focuses on using AI to create educational materials. Learn how to increase productivity, create images for a variety of teaching activities, and to support both IEP development and lesson plans aligned with specific state standards. We'll also explore AI's role in enhancing college teaching with various common and even some innovative tools.The session will discuss the advantages, limitations, and legal aspects of using AI in education.

    • Dr. LIsa Dieker is the Williamson Family Distinguished Professor of Special Education in the School of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Kansas (KU). She serves as the Director of a Center in the Assessment and Achievement Institute called FLITE (flexible learning through innovations in teaching and education). Dr. Dieker’s research focuses on harnessing the power of teachers working across disciplines in inclusive settings, with her work focusing on teacher education, special education, and innovative uses of technology. She has managed over 60 grants from state, local, national, international, and foundation sources amounting to more than $25M. She provided over 150 keynotes, has produced 7 books, over 100 articles and chapters, and has held 4 journal editorships. She holds 6 patents in simulation and education.

    Cost: $59 for all three sessions.

    Sessions 1 & 3 will be recorded and available for viewing after each session.
