AIDGC Workshop 2024 - Lithium Batteries

The Australasian Institute of Dangerous Goods Consultants (AIDGC) is proud to present its facilitated annual workshop on the 5th of September 2024 at the Pullman Hyde Park Sydney.

The theme of this year’s workshop addresses the topical subject of lithium batteries including safety, storage, testing, transport, recycling, and risk management. The workshop will feature three presentations by industry experts, followed by a panel discussion facilitated by Jason Costa, AIDGC National President.

The workshop is intended to be interactive, so please come ready to share your experiences and have questions ready for the presentation team.

The Importance of Battery Management for Workplaces
Caleb Urquhart – CEO, Storemasta

As organisations become more aware of lithium-ion battery dangers, the need for effective battery management grows. This involves taking a risk management approach to batteries – with handling, charging, storage and transport.

Effectively identifying hazards and assessing risks is vital, although perhaps the most challenging part is determining what controls to implement. The provision for lithium-ion battery storage equipment, as well as alarm systems, fire suppression and compliance monitoring, can help decrease risk and alert staff to any potential hazards sooner.

For several years, Caleb Urquhart and the Storemasta team have worked with the industry and clients to reduce fire risk with lithium-ion batteries. Case studies will illustrate the need for intuitive and innovative engineering controls, as well as the benefits of applying a proven risk management methodology to workplace batteries.

Regulatory Landscape, Practical Reality, and Battery Recycling Industry Ready at Scale

The battery recycling industry is changing rapidly and is facing a variety of material issues in business operations and regulatory compliance as regulatory arrangements are not keeping pace with technology deployment and circular economy drivers. A solution focused approach can support industry growth and help inform broader policy discussions. It can help streamline and standardise business practices to support risk management, insurance, capital raising and commercial lending.

This presentation will focus on case studies of current challenges and potential solutions to scaling up a safe and sustainable battery recycling industry.

Lithium Batteries – Testing and Certification

There are several key certifications and testing requirements when considering the safety of your Lithium batteries. The most common being IEC62133, IEC62619 and UN38.3. What do these certifications actual test and what are the differences between them? This presentation will give an overview of each standard and give an insight into what is actually tested.
