AIGI Indigenous Governance Workshop

Brought to you by Pilbara for Purpose and the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute.

This interactive workshop is designed for Indigenous and non-Indigenous organisations and individuals across the Pilbara who are involved in or supporting governance in community, corporate, cultural or service delivery settings. Drawing on the AIGI Indigenous Governance Toolkit, we’ll explore how Indigenous organisations must simultaneously hold cultural and community accountabilities, while navigating the realities of compliance, funding and partnership in a Pilbara context. 

Session one: Introduction to Indigenous Governance Excellence 

Using AIGI’s Principles of Effective Indigenous Governance, we’ll share practical examples and tools that support governance built on local legitimacy, cultural strength and adaptive strategies. We’ll also discuss how non-Indigenous organisations can better recognise Indigenous systems of decision-making and authority, and work in partnership in ways that support self-determination rather than override it. 

Session two: Succession planning and creating a pipeline of Indigenous Directors 

Strong governance includes planning for the future. In this session, we’ll explore what succession looks like, from building up emerging leaders, to ensuring knowledge is passed on, to navigating board transitions smoothly and safely. We’ll look at succession planning from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives, focusing on culturally safe approaches that centre community strengths. This includes supporting Indigenous board members in non-Indigenous organisations and using tools like skills mapping to build governance capacity for the long term. This session is grounded in the belief that governance must evolve while staying connected to Country, culture and community vision.
