AIP (WA) Annual AGM & Dinner (2024)
Event description
Join us for the AIP (WA) Annual AGM and Dinner, Wednesday 13th November, at the University of Western Australia in Crawley, WA, Australia. This convivial in-person event brings together members of the AIP (WA) community for our annual AGM and an evening of networking, including a talk by Dr Danka Sampson, recently named a 2024 Young Tall Poppy.
Members and their guests, non-members, and students are all most welcome, and a limited number of heavily-discounted tickets are available for full-time student members of the AIP. We encourage supervisors to support non-member students to attend so that they can learn what the AIP has to offer.
The evening will kick-off with pre-dinner drinks and networking, followed by a quick AGM for members (students are encouraged to attend), then dinner and drinks and Dr Sampson's talk.
To facilitate networking, the dinner this year will be a cocktail-style selection of canapés and "substantials", equivalent to a full meal. Guests will be able to sit, stand and mingle during the dinner service. To keep costs down, drinks will be sold from a bar at the venue on the night.

From waves to images: optical coherence tomography in clinical application |
| This talk explores the fundamental physics underlying optical coherence tomography (OCT) and its clinical application. OCT is a revolutionary imaging technique that leverages principles of interferometry to provide rapid, non-invasive acquisition of near-cellular scale-resolution, structural cross-sectional and volumetric images of semi-transparent objects, such as human soft tissues. OCT can also be extended by hardware and software modification to provide alternative contrast and additional information. OCT has proven to be a game changer in ophthalmic care and has become the most-performed imaging procedure in ophthalmology. The OCT field is growing beyond ophthalmology, though, impacting to varying extents many other medical fields, including cardiology, gastroenterology, dermatology, otolaryngology, dentistry, and pulmonary, cancer, and reproductive medicine. By bridging the gap between physics and clinical applications, this talk illustrates how OCT continues to transform diagnostic practices and improve patient outcomes. |
| BIO: Dr Danka Sampson is a translational researcher and senior lecturer jointly appointed between the Lions Eye Institute and the University of Western Australia. She is involved in the global optics and photonics community through engagement with Optica and SPIE – the largest optics and photonics societies globally. She serves as a light science ambassador and supports various committees for Optica and with SPIE designs STEM children’s books and educational games/materials. |
