ALACC Library and Archive Copyright Training, Victoria

This training will take place in seminar room at the State Library Victoria. It is accessible via entrance 3 on Latrobe Street by both lift and stairs.

Copyright – it touches on almost all areas of practice in libraries and archives, yet many do not feel confident in dealing with it on a day to day basis. Recognising the need, the Australian Libraries and Archives Copyright Coalition (ALACC) continues to provide copyright training to members and non-members nationwide.

This training aims to arm librarians and archivists with the knowledge and skills to tackle copyright in their institutions. From document delivery to open access, we cover it all and take questions from the floor.

Content

UPDATED: Two sessions will be run between 10 am and 4 pm.

The sessions are aimed at attendees with different levels of knowledge and experience, and the two are designed to work as discrete sessions or as a single full-day copyright primer. These two sessions are:

1. Copyright Essentials (morning) – intended for those who want to learn or brush up on their copyright basics.
2. Copyright Extended (afternoon) – looks at the latest updates and copyright practices; assumes either a base knowledge of copyright or attendance at the morning session. This session will end with a hot topics panel, featuring local experts talking about the latest topics shaping their own work.

The day is designed so that you can attend any of the sessions individually or combine them for a fuller program. They will be held in the same location, with a break for lunch in between. Please register for all sessions you plan to attend - places fill up fast. No catering is provided however there are a number of cafes in walking distance.

Cost

Both sessions are free for ALACC member organisations and their employees – so if you or your institution* are a member of ALIA, NSLA, CAUL, AGLIN, CAARA, ASLA, ASA or other member organisations, the only cost is your time. They are also open to non-members; however a price is charged. Members of the ALACC's sister organisation, the Australian Digital Alliance, receive a discount on this price.

*Please note: There is a limited capacity allocation for employees of institutions that are organisational members of ALIA. If you are not a member of ALIA as an individual and you wish to attend the training, please first contact the institution through which you are affiliated with ALIA. Each ALIA affiliated organisation has up to 3 free tickets per session.

Copyright Essentials – 10 am–12:30 pm

10:00 am – The foundations of copyright

A quick run through of the basics: What is protected? What rights do copyright owners enjoy? How long does copyright last?

11:15 am – Morning tea

11:30 am – Using copyright material

Making use of copyright material: What is not protected by copyright? And copyright licensing, non-infringing uses, fair dealing and general copyright exceptions, libraries and archives exceptions (document delivery, interlibrary loan, presevation, research, disability access, section 200AB and others).

12:30 pm – Lunch

Copyright Extended – 1:30 pm–3:30 pm

1:30 pm – Latest developments for libraries and archives

An update on the latest in Australian copyright that affects the sector. In this session we will look at:

• The Copyright Access Reforms Bill exposure draft and future copyright reform.
• Virtual Storytime and other industry agreements.

The session will also briefly outline ongoing copyright law reform activities.

2:00 pm – Choose your own adventure

After our updates, we provide a chance for our audience to drive the conversation, choosing what they would like to focus on for the last hour. This gives an opportunity to discuss topics of particular relevance or interest to the audience, such as licence management, Creative Commons, Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP), practical strategies for risk management and many other copyright topics. If time permits, the presenter will also use this time to provide detailed responses to questions from the audience.

3:30pm – Afternoon tea

PLEASE NOTE: The final session at 4 pm with a special guest speakers has been cancelled and the training will now finish at 4 pm.
