Event Aim
To respectfully acknowledge Indigenous cultures and the kaupapa (true significance) of the most important day in the history of Aotearoa (NZ).
To preserve cultural heritage and nurture community cohesion and connectivity through Unity in Diversity.
To educate people about New Zealand’s founding document
‘The Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi)’ and why we acknowledge ‘Waitangi Day’.
Waitangi Day Kumera 2022, now in its 9th year acknowledges the most important day in the history of Aotearoa (New Zealand, NZ) - Waitangi Day.
First officially commemorated in 1934, it has been celebrated as a public holiday in NZ since 1974. It represents the anniversary of the signing of the 'Treaty of Waitangi’ New Zealand’s founding document, signed in 1840 in the town of Waitangi, between representatives of the British Crown and over 500 Māori chiefs becoming the first globally recognised founding document in history, that was created between a world super power (British Crown) and a small indigenous nation (NZ Maori).
Our event aims to educate people on the significance and the true meaning/purpose of the day and the "Treaty of Waitangi" document, in a region where Census data collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, shows that the northern Gold Coast area is home to the highest population of New Zealand citizens in the entire state of Queensland, with Te Reo Maori being the second most dominant language spoken in the area, after English.
As an important marker in the history of Aotearoa (NZ), recognition of the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi as the nation's founding document, will continue to encourage leaders, communities and individuals to mark the day in new ways.
