The Allied and Scientific Health Office is pleased be hosting the inaugural Allied Health Advanced Clinical Practice Symposium to be held at the SAHMRI Auditorium on Thursday 23 May 2024. Registrations at 8.30am for a prompt 9 am start.

The event has been preceded by an Allied Health Innovation Challenge, which canvassed ideas for allied health advanced clinical practice roles from multidisciplinary healthcare teams across SA Health. The symposium will showcase:

Tangible allied health workforce-based solutions to support consumer-centred care, experience and outcomes.
Examples of how allied health advanced clinical practice roles can address health care challenges (e.g., improving access, service / system flow, reduce wait times, avoiding unnecessary transfers of care, reducing acute re-presentations, interface with aged care / disability / primary care).
Potential clinical service improvements created through utilising advanced allied health skills, knowledge and/or new technology for the benefit of the consumer.
Examples of how allied health advanced clinical practitioners contribute to public healthcare and healthcare teams.

Keynote Speaker Dr Jo Morris is Executive Director of Rehabilitation, Aged and Community Care and Allied Health at Canberra Health Services leading complex healthcare teams and workforce transformation. Jo has worked as an Extended Scope Physiotherapist (ESP) in Orthopaedic Triage, Emergency Department (ED) and led the introduction of ESP roles for ACT Health. Jo was invited by Health Workforce Australia to support the national roll out of ESP roles in ED and completed her PhD evaluating ESP roles and the impacts for patients of waiting for orthopaedic care.

Special Guest Professor James Charles (BPod, MthSci (Pod), PhD) is a proud Kaurna man from Adelaide Plains, South Australia, currently serving as Director of the First Peoples Health Unit at Griffith University. As one of the first Aboriginal podiatrists in Australia, he holds the distinction of being the first to achieve a Master of Podiatry and a PhD in Aboriginal foot health. Dr. Charles has contributed extensively to Aboriginal health, offering clinical podiatry services across urban, rural, and remote communities nationwide. He chaired Indigenous Allied Health Australia (2009–2010) and represented on the national "Close the Gap" committee (2008–2009). In recognition of his contributions, he received the national NAIDOC "Scholar of the Year" award in 2017, the Alumni Accolade Award from the University of South Australia in 2018, and the outstanding Alumni Achiever Award from the University of Newcastle in 2019. Additionally, he received a UNESCO achievement award for scientific education in 2019. His impactful research in Aboriginal health is evidenced by numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

ACCESSIBILITY

The SAHMRI Ground Floor (Level 3), including the Foyer and Auditorium, is equipped with the following accessibility features:

• Automatic glass sliding doors at the Main Entrance

• Right hand transfer unisex accessible toilet

• Wheelchair-accessible baby change facilities

• Hearing assist technology

• A ramp for the stage is provided to allow access for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility

• Guide Dogs and other registered assistance animals are welcome

Transport and parking

SAHMRI is easily accessible by public transport. Timetables for Adelaide’s bus, train and tram services can be obtained from the Adelaide Metro website.

Unfortunately, there is no public parking available at SAHMRI, however, there are various paid and street parking options available nearby. A drop off zone is available outside of SAHMRI on North Terrace. In situations where access via car is required, special arrangements can be made with SAHMRI. Nearby parking options include the Adelaide Convention Centre on North Terrace or at the Entertainment Centre (you can take the tram directly to the front of the SAHMRI facility).
