Afro-Peruvian Jazz / Live Cuban dance
LIVE at The Servo
Saturday 23rd March 2024
6pm
On Sat March 23rd musicians from world music group ALLY are coming to The Servo to celebration Harmony Day alongside insanely wonderful Cuban dancer Cruz Vazquez Borges. ARIA-nominated ALLY presents global music drawn from Afro-Peruvian, Cuban, Afro-Brazilian and Andalusian traditional rhythms paired with a modern jazz aesthetic and spoken word. AND because they know Port Kembla loves to dance, they'll be performing a set of Cuban rumba and son for you to shake those hips!
Our first set features Brazilian Slam Poet Queen Dai Moret and the second features you on the dance floor with Cruz enjoying mambo, son, guaguancó and more. Join us for a night of spectacular, trailblazing original music that sounds great sitting in a chair or moving on the dance floor.
Artists include two-time winner of Australia’s Poetry Grand Slam Brazilian Australian poet Dai Moret, saxophonist/composer Gai Bryant (Elio Villafranca, Jim McNeely), sensational trombonist James Greening (Lou Reed, Maria Schneider, the catholics), Peruvian Australian percussionists Giorgio Rojas (Burn the Floor, Ursula Yovich) and Julio Candela (El Orqueston, Felix Valdelomar), pianist Daniel Pliner (Watussi, Monsieur Camembert), bassist Harry Birch (Holopeak), sensational Cuban dancer Cruz Vazquez Borges (Havana Nights, Lady Salsa).
Live performances are marked with high energy and experimentalism. Critics John Shand said, “ALLY never quite lets your expectations settle.” Jessica Nicholas described the ensemble live as a “fascinating amalgam of styles and cultures”. Professor John Whiteoak’s experienced “the inexhaustibly inventive Gai Bryant at Melbourne’s Paris Cat backed by Latin rhythm and other accompaniment of astonishing virtuosity, textual density and distinctiveness.”
