Description

Alternate Weave is a playful, adaptive approach to basketry and fiber art that encourages makers to step outside traditional over–under patterns and explore more organic, sculptural forms. Instead of following a fixed grid, the weave shifts, pivots, and responds to the natural curves of the materials, allowing each piece to grow with its own character. This method pairs beautifully with plant fibers like Coccus Palm, whose supple strands and gentle color variations invite experimentation. When combined with hand-dyed raffia—rich in oceanic blues, corals, greens, and sandy neutrals—the Alternate Weave becomes a way to paint with texture, letting each twist and crossing line mimic the fluid, unpredictable movement of water.

In an Alternate Weave workshop, participants use Coccus Palm and vibrant raffia to craft small, whimsical sea creatures—tiny fish, curling octopuses...odd shapes. The workshop typically begins with a grounding introduction to the fibers: how to soften palm strands, explore the natural fibres and have fun with color. From there, the focus shifts to creative weaving techniques that alternate direction, tension, and pattern to form textured bodies.

The process is meditative, tactile, and delightfully intuitive, inviting participants of all skill levels to explore the playful side of fiber art. By the end, each maker has not only a unique woven creature but also a deeper appreciation for how natural materials and imaginative techniques can bring tiny worlds to life.
