Alternative Firing - Obvara & Naked Raku

Alternative Firing: Obvara & Naked Raku is a dynamic, hands-on workshop exploring two distinctive surface techniques. Participants will learn the ancient Obvara firing process, using a fermented organic solution to create immediate, unpredictable surface effects. In the second half of the session, participants will explore both one-step and two-step Naked Raku techniques, often described as “drawing with smoke,” producing fine crackle patterns and tonal variation. Over approximately four hours, participants will load and fire their own bisque pieces, observing the full firing cycle and completing both processes. Finished works can be taken home on the day.

About the Artist
Jacqui is an experienced ceramic artist and educator specialising in alternative firing techniques. She holds an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics and has delivered numerous workshops in Obvara and Raku for private groups and TAFE. She is also the author of a book on alternative firing, reflecting her depth of knowledge and commitment to sharing these processes.

Materials and Equipment
Jacqui will provide the kiln, Obvara brew, Raku glazes, slips, and all necessary firing equipment. Participants must bring 10 –15 small bisque-fired pots made from raku clay (no attachments or narrow necks). Some bisqueware will be available for purchase on the day.

Additional Information
Suitable for all skill levels. The workshop runs for approximately four hours and includes a break for lunch. Please wear appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for outdoor firing conditions.
