Mount John Observatory Alumni Experience - May 2025
Event description
Join fellow UC alumni and their guests for a unique opportunity to visit one of the University of Canterbury’s most significant research facilities—the UC Mt John Observatory at Lake Tekapo.
The event begins on Saturday 24 May 2025 at 12:45 PM with a guided daytime tour of the observatory. This is a rare chance to explore the facility and learn about the groundbreaking research taking place in one of the world's best locations for astronomy.
Following the tour, grab a takeaway afternoon tea and you'll have time to check in to your accommodation or explore Tekapo before the evening programme. Later, we will meet in the town centre for an engaging astronomy presentation, followed by a buffet dinner. The evening concludes with a night-time stargazing session back at Mt John Observatory—(weather permitting).
For those wishing to extend their visit, The Dark Sky Experience is a thought-provoking, multi-media installation designed to deepen your understanding of the night sky. If you’d like to attend, please book directly with the Dark Sky Project and advise the staff you are UC alumni.
Important Details
Travel and accommodation are not included in the event price, so attendees must arrange their own transport and lodging. Tekapo offers a range of accommodation options, including hotels and Airbnb stays.
While May is an optimal time for stargazing, visibility is dependent on weather conditions. The daytime tour, presentations, and Sunday morning experience will go ahead regardless of the weather.
Due to limited availability, tickets tend to sell out quickly. This event is for attendees aged 16 and over, and each alum may purchase a ticket for themselves and 1 guest. If you would like further tickets, please email alumni@cantebury.ac.nz to be added to the waitlist.
We look forward to seeing you there for this unforgettable experience!
