What are Immersive Learning Circles?

Leaders, consultants, and change agents often face obstacles and dilemmas that challenge their existing worldviews. This calls for greater complexity in the way we frame situations, practice mindfulness, navigate ambiguity, and embody care. Given the pace of change faced by modern employees, our ability to make level-headed, value-based judgment calls - particularly when things just don't seem right - is key to effective leadership practice. Transforming ourselves into effective change agents who can adapt to complex situations is dependent upon our ability to stretch our thinking as we engage and learn from real-life challenges. Immersive Learning Circles (ILCs) are designed to create a safe, collaborative space to develop leadership skills that are difficult to accomplish through traditional instruction, including the ability to practice use-of-self, mindfulness, and real-time adaptation.

ILCs are designed to flex a different “learning muscle” than we may be used to, improving our ability to reflect on our taken-for-granted assumptions, remain flexible in ambiguous situations, regulate emotion, gain comfort with making and learning from mistakes, and act with greater confidence. When it comes to ILCs, it's not the simulation that matters, it's the circle! In other words, it is the exchange of diverse perspectives between participants that adds the greatest value to ILCs.

Bill Brendel is the creator of OpenSourceOD a community of practitioners dedicated to democratizing Organization Development (OD) knowledge, skills, and innovations, for all who are eager to drive positive change. Holding a doctorate from Columbia University, his work was recognized in 2021 with the OD Network's Lisa Kimball Award for Evolving the Field of OD, and in 2023 with Article of the Year Award for research that led to the development of the M.O.S.T. Meaningful Career Assessment. With a rich background of over 20 years in global consulting, Bill also coaches individuals transitioning into OD careers and teaches future consultants at Penn State.
