    Event description

Please note: This class is held at community radio station PBSfm on Johnston street, Collingwood.

Who listens to the radio? Even amongst all the streaming services in our faces these days, the humble radio is still alive and kicking! Even thriving!

Community Radio is a unique category of radio broadcasting in Australia, and Melbourne alone has so many unique stations!

But have you ever wonder just how radio works? How do you get a radio license? How do transmitters work? How do you become a broadcaster? How does a panel work? How to get played on the radio? What to say when the mic turns on!?

This is your chance to hop inside the radio - visiting one of Melbourne's beloved community radio stations - to see, hear and learn how radio actually happens. Your teacher was a long-time broadcaster at PBS 106.7FM and will run your through the ins & outs of radio and then some! Maddy learnt broadcasting at PBS in 2006 and has been teaching new announcers at PBS and other community radio stations since.

    What will we cover?

This class takes place at the PBS radio studios at Collingwood Yards. In touring the station we will see and learn about all aspects of operation, such as:

    • What is community radio
    • Differences between commercial, community and national broadcasting services
    • What sort of staff and roles does community radio rely on
    • How do the studios work
    • How do bands get played on the radio
    • The road to being radio broadcaster
    • How is community radio funded
    • There will be lots of opportunity to ask questions!

      Who will be Teaching?

Maddy (she/her) is a crafty hobbyist based in Narrm who has a big heart for colour, expression and over-the-top jewellery. She enjoys working with all sorts of materials and mediums, and repurposing everyday items into expressions of art and fashion. As a musician, these wonky and not-so-wonky creations often find their way onto stages around Melbourne.

Maddy has also a radio broadcaster and DJ in Melbourne for over 15 years, hosting an Australian music program on PBSfm and spinning records around bars around town.
