    Event description

The wetlands and coastline of Gulf St Vincent north of Adelaide are recognised amongst the most important in Australia for migratory and resident shorebirds. The area comprises the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary established by the South Australian State Government.

Every summer over 15,000 migratory shorebirds, from pocket sized Red-necked Stints to giant Eastern Curlews leave their breeding grounds (up to 11,000km away!) and seek out the shores around Gulf St Vincent. Here they join our resident shorebirds who use the safe beaches and undisturbed wetlands and claypans of the region to raise their young.

Birdlife Australia and Green Adelaide invite you to come & learn about these amazing birds and see them feeding and roosting along the shore at Thompson Beach.

With support from Friends of Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary (FAIBS) and Birds SA, we will view the birds on the outgoing tide before morning tea and a Shorebird Information presentation.
