This one-day workshop is designed for beginners and anyone wanting to develop a practical understanding of oil painting.

We will explore the essential techniques and materials used in oil painting, with an emphasis on learning through practical exercises.

The workshop will cover:

  • Getting started with oils — understanding basic materials, tools and setup

  • Oil painting mediums — what they do and how to use them

  • Colour mixing — learning how to mix and control colour

  • Coloured grounds — exploring how the colour of the surface affects the painting

  • Underpainting — establishing the basic structure, values and colour

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a practical foundation in oil painting techniques and materials, and greater confidence to continue developing their own work.

Michael Herron has been a practicing artist in Sydney for over 35 years and a teacher for the past 30 years. Michael’s qualifications include BA (Visual Arts), City Art Institute, UNSW, and TAFE Certificate of Fine Art.
