Anagama Opening

Anagama Opening offers a rare opportunity to be part of the reveal of a wood-fired anagama kiln after the 100 hour firing cycle. Participants are guided through the full context of the process, beginning with a short introduction to the firing process, and moving into the opening and unpacking of the kiln. Participants engage directly with the work, observing the effects of flame, ash, and atmosphere on surface and form. The experience provides insight into woodfiring as an elemental, time-based practice, combining demonstration, discussion, and hands-on participation in kiln unpacking. For anyone wanting a deeper understanding of this slow craft, or considering this path for your making, this is a rare opportunity. 

About the Artist
Venessa Skye is a ceramic artist and dedicated woodfirer based at Middle Pocket Pottery, where she operates her anagama kiln. She leads a team of woodfirers and coordinates each firing with a strong focus on process, collaboration, and material understanding. Her practice is grounded in traditional woodfiring methods, and she is committed to sharing knowledge of this ancient technique through teaching and guided kiln experiences.

Materials and Equipment
Gloves and masks are provided if required for kiln unpacking. No additional materials are needed for participation. Participants should wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes. Please bring lunch and a water bottle. This is an active studio and kiln environment, so appropriate clothing for safety and comfort is essential.
