Description

Anchor in the Field (of Becoming)

A full-length post-Western Butoh dance work and ritual of release, transformation, and embodied presence.

Performed and co-choreographed by Sheri Brown in collaboration with Raphael Laigo, Anchor in the Field (of Becoming) unravels the body through memory, identity, and inherited belief systems—thread by thread, gesture by gesture.

Blending Butoh, live and recorded sound, original visual art, historical inquiry, light, and space, the work creates an immersive performance environment—less a story to watch than a field to enter. Memory gathers through image, interruption, longing, and dream as the private body encounters the larger forces of history, culture, power, and collective identity.

At the work’s center is the poetic unraveling of the “American suit”: a metaphor for identities and cultural narratives inherited and worn by the body. As its familiar shape begins to loosen, stillness, rupture, and renewal move the body toward a liberation born not from escape, but through attentive presence, trust, and transformation.

Anchor in the Field (of Becoming) offers no single answer or conclusion. Instead, it invites an embodied encounter with uncertainty and change—and asks what it might mean to remain deeply human as old identities dissolve and new ways of being emerge.
