Description

702 ABC Sydney invites you to the 2026 Andrew Olle Media Lecture, to be delivered by Alessandra Galloni, Editor-in-Chief of Reuters, on Tuesday 21 July at ABC Studios, Sydney.

Held in honour of legendary ABC Broadcaster Andrew Olle, this annual lecture is one of Australia's most respected forums examining the role and future of journalism. Proceeds from ticket sales support ABC's long-standing charity partner, Brain Cancer Australia.

The 2026 Andrew Olle Media Lecturer: Alessandra Galloni

Alessandra Galloni is one of the world's most influential newsroom leaders, overseeing Reuters' global editorial operations. She was named editor-in-chief in 2021 and is the first woman to serve as editor-in-chief in the organisation's 175-year history.

Galloni began her career with Reuters in Rome in 1996 and has held senior editorial roles across Europe, including 13 years at The Wall Street Journal. She returned to Reuters in 2013 and was later appointed Global Managing Editor, leading international news planning and coverage.

Her work has been recognised with some of journalism's highest honours, including the Lawrence Minard Editor Award, an Overseas Press Club Award and a UK Business Journalist of the Year Award. She is a graduate of Harvard University and holds a master's degree from the London School of Economics.

In her lecture, Galloni will reflect on the values underpinning trusted, independent journalism at a time of profound change for the media.

Award-winning journalist and ABC presenter Hamish Macdonald will host the evening.

Following the keynote, Hamish Macdonald will lead a panel discussion on The Future of Journalism, exploring how global trends are shaping the Australian media landscape. Joining Alessandra Galloni on the panel are Hugh Marks (Manging Director, ABC), Michael Miller, (Executive Chair, News Corp Australasia), Jane Palfreyman, (Managing Director, SBS) and Matt Stanton, (CEO and Managing Director, Nine Entertainment).

Together, they will examine the challenges and opportunities facing journalism today, and what the future of trusted, independent media looks like in Australia.
