In this talk, Sir William Dobell Fellow Andrew Yip will argue for the ways in which the development of interactive, real-time interfaces using video game engines can be vectors for deep and ongoing exploration of site and object histories, opening new forms of affective investigation for researchers and audiences. With reference to case studies and workflows from recent museum-based research projects, Andrew will address the use of physics-based 3D modelling of cultural heritage artefacts and sites as a speculative art historical technique and discuss opportunities and pitfalls in virtual reconstruction. During his Fellowship at the Australian National University, Andrew will be working with A/Prof Robert Wellington on a high-fidelity reconstruction of Louis XIV’s ‘lost’ Cabinet des Médailles at Versailles and developing a VR interaction framework for cultural heritage sites.

Dr Andrew Yip is Senior Lecturer, Immersive Design at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, where he teaches into the Master of Simulation and Immersive Technologies, Master of Design and Master of Visual Effects programs. Andrew researches applications for immersive and interactive visualisation to cultural heritage and museum practices. Andrew has designed numerous large-scale immersive exhibitions and his installations have been exhibited in Australia and internationally at museums including the Art Gallery of NSW, Powerhouse Museum, Heide Museum of Modern Art and the South Australian Maritime Museum. At UNSW he is a fellow of the iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research, the 3DX Lab and the Autonomous Media Laboratory.
