An Evening of Hope Film Screening Event & Panel Discussion
Event description
The City of Santa Monica and Sustainable Works are proud to present: An Evening of Hope Film Screening Event and Panel Discussion
Join us for three inspiring and hopeful short films followed by a panel discussion.
The Films
Wild Hope: The Great Ocean Cleanup
Inventor Boyan Slat is on a mission to rid oceans of plastic. His team at The Ocean Cleanup designs and deploys
systems that pull trash from the open ocean.
But plastics keep flowing into the ocean, largely from the world’s most polluted rivers. In Jamaica, Boyan’s team has
allied with Alecia Beaufort and a local group already cleaning up their waterways. Together, they’ve deployed a
new system to trap plastic at the source as it flows downriver during a storm. Their work is the proof Boyan
envisioned, that seeing is believing, and that belief spurs further action.
From Soil to Soul: Food Justice in L.A.
Imagine a world where every community has the power to grow its own food, where children know the story of the food
they eat and where their food comes from, and where our relationship with the land is rooted in justice, respect,
and sustainability. This is the vision behind From Soil to Soul, a groundbreaking documentary series created by a
diverse, BIPOC team of filmmakers, farmers, and environmental advocates who are determined to change the food
system for good.
Wild Hope: Protecting Paradise
On Panama’s remote Pearl Islands, marine biologist Callie Veelenturf is using her research on endangered sea turtles
to help the country enshrine the rights of nature into law—and help the communities living there protect their own
environment and livelihood.
Even though the residents of Saboga have long known their island is a critical habitat for marine life, that’s a
difficult claim to prove to government officials. When Callie Veelenturf partnered with them to launch a satellite
tagging project, the effort was able to reveal where the turtles live—and set up the grounds for their future
protection. Soon after, Callie met with Panama’s First Lady to talk about the rights of nature: a legal theory that says humans
aren’t the only creatures with rights under constitutional or state law.
