Neurological conditions are now leading cause of ill health and disability globally, with stroke being the largest contributor.

One in four adults will have a stroke at some point in their life and two-thirds of these will be under 70 years of age. Unfortunately, the problem is only going to get worse over the next 10 years.

The healthcare system is excellent at treatment in the first few hours and days, but half of all stroke survivors feel abandoned when they get home as treatment and support to help promote recovery quickly disappears. One contributor to this is the belief that stroke survivors hit a ‘recovery plateau’ and nothing more can be done.

Internationally recognised Professor Nick Ward will explore where this idea came from and show why it is not true, so that rehabilitation services can be based on the idea that recovery from stroke can continue for life.
