Event description

Another Place by Eleanor Kay

Presented as part of the VCA Master of Theatre (Writing) Festival 2024

As the Darwin dry season draws to a close, the lives of Audrey, Joe, Rose and Ash become curiously intertwined as they navigate their relationships and roles within a fraught socio-political system. They are all just trying their best.

About the writer

Eleanor has had a love of theatre and playwriting since editing the script to give herself a larger acting role in her year three primary school play. Undertaking the Master of Theatre (Writing) has been a long-time goal which she was able to pursue after relocating from Darwin this year. In 2017 Eleanor undertook a playwriting course with TAFE SA and wrote and performed in Hesitation at the Adelaide Fringe Festival with her brother Lachlan. In 2020 her play Faltering was shortlisted for the Brown's Mart Theatre Award. She lives in Brunswick, works as a land rights lawyer and hopes to keep making time for the essential acts of writing and collaborating.

Acknowledgements

Thank you to the VCA staff who helped in the development of Another Place, including the wonderful Raimondo Cortese, Emily Sheehan and Chris Mead for their guidance and insight.

Thanks also to James Burchett for his dramaturgical wisdom and Ben Kelly for constantly listening and contributing to the development of some key moments in the play.

To the incredible 2024 writing class, you continually leave me in awe. Thanks for everything.

Parking

The City of Melbourne has recently changed the parking restrictions around the Southbank Campus. Parking control hours are now expanded to 7am–10pm, seven days per week, and are capped at three hours. A $2-per-hour fee after 7pm is also now in place. There is no change to the $4-per-hour peak rate between 7am–7pm. Parking inspectors are regularly in the area fining drivers who overstay their meter, so we encourage everyone to be aware and avoid an expensive fine. More information.
