Anselm

Directed by Wim Wenders | Germany | 2023 | 93min | Documentary | Rated M
In German, with English Subtitles

Australian Premiere

A stunning visual journey through the art of one of the most extraordinary artists of our time (Anselm Kiefer), created by one of the most influential filmmakers (Wim Wenders).

Veteran German filmmaker Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire, Paris Texas) creates a portrait of Anselm Kiefer, one of the most innovative and important painters and sculptors of our time. Originally shot in 6K, presented in 3D, the film is a cinematic experience of the artist’s work which explores human existence and the cyclical nature of history, inspired by literature, poetry, philosophy, science, mythology and religion.

For over two years, Wenders traced Kiefer’s path from his native Germany to his current home in France, connecting the stages of his life to the essential places of his career that spans more than five decades.

Visually thrilling and refreshingly unconventional, Anselm pays a mesmerizing tribute to a brilliant artist's life and legacy.

“Compelling. It puts you inside the art in a way very few films about artists have.” - Filmweek

“This is a superbly controlled and expressed film and its high seriousness about the nature and purpose of art really is invigorating.” - The Guardian

“Magnificent.” - Variety
