What does it mean to fight for gender equality within a system designed to benefit the select few? Is it possible to uplift and empower all women within the confines of such a structure? And what would an alternative system look like?

Join us for the second session of Troublemakers where we’ll be exploring the many ways in which feminism sits uncomfortably with capitalism – and why it might be time for an anti-capitalist feminist revolution.

In The Trouble with Capitalism: A Case for Anti-Capitalist Feminism, we’ll be joined by Bangladeshi writer and activist Sanam Amin and Asia Pacific Regional Secretary for Public Services International Kate Lappin who’ll demystify the idea of anti-capitalism and share their exciting, creative ideas for a post-capitalist new world order.

In a world that’s constantly trying to sell us on the idea of “She-Eos” as female empowerment while simultaneously ignoring how their success is made possible by the exploitation of women of colour, trans women and gender diverse people, this session will question why we ever let feminism become so synonymous with accumulating power in the first place – and start us on the journey of looking for our collective liberation elsewhere.

Speakers

Sanam Amin is a Bangladeshi writer, researcher and facilitator committed to building a more equitable and just world. She has five years’ of experience in feminist movement building and organising, and has led the Women’s Global Strike campaign. She believes in the power of community organising and cross-movement solidarity. If women stop, the world stops.

Kate Lappin is the Asia Pacific Regional Secretary for Public Services International, the Global Union Federation representing more than 30 million workers who deliver public services in 154 countries and territories. Kate headed the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development for eight years and has worked across labour, feminist and human rights movements for more than 20 years.
