Unpacking anti-racism and social cohesion: The way forward for local communities
Event description
Join us for the latest in a series of webinars for Refugee Welcome Zone councils where we hear from thought leaders and local practicioners on how we can implement better policy and practice at the local level.
In this webinar we will unpack what we mean by social cohesion and consider how we can tackle racism and build more equitable and inclusive communities at the local level.
As anti migrant sentiment and far right populist movements are emboldened globally, we will consider the intersection of discrimination faced by refugees and people seeking asylum ask what can be done at the local level to counter division, discrimination and foster harmonious communities.
Featuring:
Giridharan Sivaraman, Race Discrimination Commissioner, and architect of the National Anti-Racism Framework,
Blaise Itabelo, National Community Engagement Manager, Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia,
Mariola Nebiu, Multicultural Project Officer, Greater Shepparton Regional Council.
Moderated by Victorian Multicultural Commissioner and RCOA Refugee Ambassador, Lizzie Kuoth, we will unpack what we mean by social cohesion, learn how local councils can play a key role in tackling racism and building inclusion and learn how new initiatives such as community sponsorship of refugees can leverage social capital to build wider community support for refugees.
