Sicilian viticulture – landscapes, grapevine diversity and cultural factors in a hot climate

Antonino Pisciotta is a researcher in the scientific disciplinary sector AGR-03 - Arboricoltura generale e Coltivazioni arboree, at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Sciences (SAAF) of the University of Palermo and a professor of viticultural technique and vineyard management in the Mediterranean environment in a hot arid climate.

Antonino is an academic of the Italian Academy of Vine and Wine and an academic of the Georgofili Academy. His research activity is aimed at the bio-agronomic problems of the viticultural sector in the Mediterranean environment and in particular on the influence of genetic and cultural factors on the architecture of the canopy, on the source-sink relationships, on the vegetative-productive activity, on the quality of grapes and on the growth and distribution of the root system. Concurrently, Prof Pisciotta's research was carried out on issues relating to water and mineral nutrition, soil management, flower, and fruiting biology, grafting combinations, the study of germplasm and precision viticulture. The research also concerned the sector relating to table viticulture, with the study of production techniques to achieve the advance and delay in ripening and soilless production techniques.
