Event description

Join Associate Professor Syaza Shukri, expert on political Islam at the Intenational Islamic University of Malaysia, at the 2025 Malaysia Update, where she will deliver a Political Update.

What is the current state of political Islam in Malaysia?  Malaysia's 2022 elections saw the Pan-Islamic Party PAS win the most seats in parliament, in what pundits called the 'green wave' (PAS's flag is green). But they remain in opposition, and questions remain over whether their 2022 results were a flash in the pan, more part of a sustained movement. War in the Middle East and economic uncertainty at home mean PAS has plenty of content to pitch to potential voters, but are they capable of taking power? And what is Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration handling the challenges of a perceived rise of political Islam in the country?

Join
Syaza, with discussant Sebastian Dettman (SMU) and moderator Ross Tapsell (ANU) as they discuss urgent trends in Malaysia's politics and democracy. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear her insights on what perhaps Southeast Asia's most dynamic yet complex political environment.

Syaza Shukri is an Associate Professor and political scientist at the International Islamic University of Malaysia. Her area of specialisation is in comparative politics, specifically in political Islam and democratisation in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, with recent focus on her home country of Malaysia. Her most recent book is published in October 2024 by Palgrave Macmillan titled Elite Populism and Malay Leaders in Malaysia.   She is a visiting fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, a non-resident research fellow at the European Centre for Populism Studies and a visiting fellow at KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific.
