Intended Audience

The course is intended for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Head and Neck Surgeons, ENT surgeons, Plastic Surgeons and Prosthodontists. The ideal combination will be a surgeon and prosthodontist. Even if you don't plan on placing immediate teeth, you will learn virtual planning with immediate guided implants for later restoration.

Observer places are available for supporting clinical staff and allied health professionals who wish to attend the lectures and observe the hands-on workshop.

This course does not teach non-microvascular surgeons how to harvest free flaps and non-dentally trained clinicians how to place dental implants.

Course Summary

This one-day course will have didactic presentations in the morning followed by a hands-on lab experience in the afternoon which will involve participants placing implants on a printed fibula model followed by osteotomy of the fibula with cutting guides and assembling the prosthesis to create the “Jaw in a Day”. Once assembly is complete, the neomandible construct with teeth will be inset onto a resected mandibular model.

Course Outline

Surgical anatomy of the fibula for the (non-microvascular) implant surgeon
Evolution of and literature review of dental implants in vascularized bone grafts
Data acquisition requirements for workup
Virtual surgical planning workflow and modification for JIAD
Designing and using cutting guides for the jaws and fibula with guided dental implant placement
Designing and using biomodels for assembly of the neomandible construct and dental prosthesis
Orientation of the fibula bone, pedicle and skin paddle for jaw reconstruction
Fibula harvest modifications for the microvascular surgeon for immediate dental implants
Prosthodontic planning: Abutment selection, occlusal planning, immediate load
Flap inset of the fibula and skin paddle into the oral cavity
Complications with immediate dental implants and dental prosthesis in fibulas

Hands on Lab

Placement of fibula cutting/implant guide
Guided placement of dental implants in a 3D printed fibula model
Perform guided fibula osteotomies to shape the bone
Plate the shaped fibula to the mandible defect with dental implants in a restorable position
Attach a 3D printed dental prosthesis to the temporary copings on the fibula/implant construct.
