Aotearoa Sustainable Development Goals Summit Series Hui #2: Be the Change

Welcome to the #DecadeOfAction! 2020 marks the 5th anniversary of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the world’s best plan to achieve a better future for all. We can be the first generation to end extreme poverty, the decisive generation in the battle against climate change & the most determined generation to fight injustice & inequality. But there is much work to do, and every year counts.

So, join us and get involved in the second of the 2020-2021 Aotearoa/New Zealand Sustainable Development Goals Summit Series events, and #BeTheChange!

Online Hui 2 builds on the conversation started in Online Hui 1 - by delving into how we can be the change in order to implement the needed changes that became apparent through the discussions in Hui 1.

In a similar fashion - this event includes inspiring lightning talks, panel discussions and engaging workshops. It will be a chance for participants to learn about and share practical opportunities to take real action towards creating a more sustainable present and future through the SDGs.

This will be followed with two parallel Streams.

Stream A:

Panel 1: Ensuring Sustainable Food Production Systems

The Primary Sector has set sustainability targets for farmers (He Waka Eke Noa - Our Future in Our Hands) and the New Zealand Climate Change Commission recommends significant further changes to farming practices. This panel brings together a young farmer, the organic industry and regenerative farming research to explore how the Sustainable Development Goals can be used to support practical solutions to our current challenges. How can New Zealand meet Target 2.4 of the SDGs: ensuring sustainable food production systems?

Workshop 1: How to Implement the SDGs in your Region: Learning from Waikato

About the facilitator: Raewyn Jones is the co-founder and co-chair of the Waikato Wellbeing Project (WWP), which is a regional initiative to achieve a more environmentally sustainable, prosperous and inclusive Waikato region by 2030. The WWP supports a grassroots movement to activate collective action towards achieving agreed targets for our region based on the SDGs.

Stream B:

Panel 2: Te Tiriti and the SDGs

This panel will enter deeply into the topic of Partnerships as expressed through SDG17 and presents Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it was intended, the foundational document for relationships and partnerships in Aotearoa New Zealand. It will offer a glimpse into understanding how Te Tiriti may be viewed and expressed for us all, and, from a Māori perspective, explore examples of good practice, elaborate on some of the difficulties encountered and suggest improved approaches to being transformational through relational politics.

Workshop 2: Growing Sustainability Culture in your Organisation: Sustainable Business Council

About the facilitator: Mike Burrell is the Executive Director at Sustainable Business Council. The Sustainable Business Council (SBC) is a CEO-led membership organisation with over 100 businesses from all sectors, ambitious for a sustainable New Zealand. His previous role was New Zealand’s High Commissioner to South Africa. Before that he was Director for Sustainable Economic Development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the founding CEO of Aquaculture New Zealand.

This event will be an excellent opportunity to discuss how the SDGs can come alive within our own communities and how we can be the change that we need to realise a sustainable present and future.

The Agenda 2030 - ratified in 2015 at the United Nations (UN) - is an agenda designed to transform our world. It is based on 17 Sustainable Development Goals which, as former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon explained, are a “roadmap to ending global poverty, building a life of dignity for all and leaving no one behind. It is also a clarion call to work in partnership and intensify efforts to share prosperity, empower people’s livelihoods, ensure peace and heal our planet for the benefit of this and future generations.” Aotearoa/New Zealand has signed onto these goals, understanding the significance of leaving no one behind and creating a sustainable present and future. In order to understand how these global goals have been, and could be, worked towards in the local context, a summit series has been designed and implemented.

With two successful summits held in 2018 and 2019, the next installment of the series will be held in 2020-2021. This installment, proudly co-hosted by the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University, with strong support from the Christchurch City Council and Ara Institute of Canterbury, takes the overall theme of ‘Pathways to (Urgent) Action’. Participants in the Summit Series will be taken on a journey through three online and one face to face events. Starting with an exploration of how we as individuals and/or organisations understand the global goals, it continues on to building an understanding of how we can enable these goals, before delving into how we can collaborate in order to achieve these goals. The final in-person Summit event, planned for September 2021 at the University of Canterbury, will explore how such collaborations for and understanding of the goals can enable transformational change.
