Aotearoa Sustainable Development Goals Summit Series Hui #3: Working Together for Change

Collaborating, connecting, and working together has never been more important than right now. Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, is our collective way forward. Join us for the next part in the 2020-2021 Aotearoa/New Zealand Sustainable Development Goals Summit Series and see how by Working Together for Change, we can create the world we want, and the world that we need!

This final online hui in the 2020-2021 Summit Series will build on kōrero from Hui#1 and Hui#2, and will be made up of panel discussions, an interactive workshop stream and a creative moment.

With topics for you to delve into ranging from Intergenerational Conversations and Justice, to the SDGs within the context of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific, this third online hui will create an opportunity for rich conversation and reflection.

As a group, you'll hear an update on the creation of an SDG Alliance in Aotearoa, before jumping into two concurrent streams. You'll be given the option to attend either:

- two facilitated panel discussions on the topics above,

- or an interactive workshop exploring how organisations can credibly measure their contribution to the SDGs using the Future Fit Business Benchmark.

Aotearoa SDG Alliance
Hui E! Community Aotearoa is committed to facilitating joint work across sectors, generations and populations to scope the viability of an SDG Alliance for Aotearoa. Hear from Ronja Ievers, Kaiwhakahaere Kaupapa (Project Manager) at Hui E! Community Aotearoa, with an update on the creation of an SDG Alliance in Aotearoa, following two incredible workshops held earlier this month.

Stream One Panel: Aotearoa New Zealand, the Pacific and the SDGs
New Zealand is a Pacific nation, and interfaces with other Pacific nations in many ways that have a direct bearing on our collective SDG goals. This panel will explore some of these pathways and offer a critical reflection on where to from here. How do we work together for change?

Chaired by Professor Steven Ratuva, Director, Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies (University of Canterbury) and featuring:

Joeli Veitayaki (Director, International Ocean Institute Pacific Islands, University of the South Pacific): Sustainability, conservation and coastal resources management: Stories from the Pacific.
Raihānia Tipoki (Ngā Uri Taniwha o Hinekōrako, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne, Rongowhakaata, Te Iwi Moriori): Ocean ecology and sustainability: Navigating the Maori-Pacific cultural connections
Christine Nurminen (International Portfolio Manager, Oxfam Aotearoa)

(followed by) Intergenerational Conversations Panel
Collaboration across generations on any issue can have its challenges. SDG Target 16:7 calls for us to ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels. Embedded in this is the notion of intergenerational justice. This session focuses on this idea, bringing together youth leaders and the Children’s Commission to explore examples of sound processes that have led to practical sustainability outcomes.

Stream Two: Interactive Workshop ‘Future Fit: a tool for Organisations'
This interactive workshop stream will explore how organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand can credibly measure their sustainability and contribution to the SDGs using the Future Fit Business Benchmark. This workshop is co-hosted by Sally Wilkins, a sustainability consultant at Proxima Consulting (an accredited Future Fit Partner since 2019) and Roger Robson-Williams, Chief Sustainability Officer at Plant and Food Research (an early adopter of the Benchmark in Aotearoa).

The Agenda 2030 - ratified in 2015 at the United Nations (UN) - is an agenda designed to transform our world. It is based on 17 Sustainable Development Goals which, as former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon explained, are a “roadmap to ending global poverty, building a life of dignity for all and leaving no one behind. It is also a clarion call to work in partnership and intensify efforts to share prosperity, empower people’s livelihoods, ensure peace and heal our planet for the benefit of this and future generations.” Aotearoa/New Zealand has signed onto these goals, understanding the significance of leaving no one behind and creating a sustainable present and future. In order to understand how these global goals have been, and could be, worked towards in the local context, a summit series has been designed and implemented.

With two successful summits held in 2018 and 2019, the next installment of the series will be held in 2020-2021. This installment, proudly co-hosted by the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University, with strong support from the Christchurch City Council and Ara Institute of Canterbury, takes the overall theme of ‘Pathways to (Urgent) Action’. Participants in the Summit Series will be taken on a journey through three online and one face to face events. Starting with an exploration of how we as individuals and/or organisations understand the global goals, it continues on to building an understanding of how we can enable these goals, before delving into how we can collaborate in order to achieve these goals. The final in-person Summit event, planned for September 2021 at the University of Canterbury, will explore how such collaborations for and understanding of the goals can enable transformational change.
