MIMI FAIRALL

Mimi Fairall is a Canberra based artist. Her work is grounded in drawing but other mediums such as painting, collage, printmaking, installation and assemblage stem from her works on paper.

Mimi’s abstract compositions are made up of a combination of bright colours, gestural marks and playful shapes. Her works are informed by imagery and sensory experiences from her everyday life - the texture of peeling posters on city buildings, the vibrancy of autumn trees changing colour or the smell of garlic cooking in butter. These experiences and Mimi’s interpretations of them fuel the initial stages of a work before the piece evolves to inform her of what to do next.

For Ap-Heart Mimi has introduced more figurative and representational depictions of items around her home and from her dreams such as plants, food and flowers. Marrying her typical abstract style with this process has resulted in a series of childlike works in skewed perspectives that favour the form and colour of objects over spatial correctness.

ROMANY FAIRALL

Romany Fairall is a painter from Canberra, who moved to Sydney in 2020.“My practice/painting meant something very different to me before COVID. My works were made out of an inquisitive and curious attitude; I was inspired to make art. Since relocating to a new city during a pandemic, my relationship to painting has shifted.

What was once a very enkindling and energising endeavour for me, has changed to be a coping mechanism. I don’t feel the art much as I make it, I use it mainly as a space to keep my mind and hands from other things.

The familiarity of the material, repetition of the process and muscle memory of the gesture allow my art to be a comforting and stable activity. I make lines and lines and lines of
glitter, cooped up in my little room, telling myself it’s okay that I’m in limbo, at least I’m still managing to paint."

Fairall is currently based in Sydney, and dearly misses her loved ones.
