Van Diemen's Band presentsÂ
ARCANGELO & CO
The music of a pioneer, performed by a new generation of baroque playersÂ
At the beginning of the 18th Century, Italian violinist Arcangelo Corelli pioneered a revolutionary new ensemble form in Rome. The 'Concerto Grosso' juxtaposes a large ensemble against a small group of soloists, highlighting the skills of the individual players and exploring the contrasting textures, sonorities and dramatic possibilities of the instrumental combinations. Corelli’s new form inspired an entire generation of composers with literally thousands of concertos written in the decades to follow.
The concerto grosso is the perfect way to showcase a new generation of lutruwita/Tasmanian baroque players, our VDB Fellows, in an exhilarating program of well-known favourites, including the "Christmas Concerto" by the great Arcangelo himself, plus long-lost gems from Evaristo Dall’Abaco and Francesco Geminiani.
