About the workshop:

Unleash your inner architect with Tom Summers as he guides you through the creation of a small ceramic sculptural piece influenced by modern architecture. Your masterpiece can be left as a standalone sculptural piece or you will have the option to make it into an incense holder.

You will learn the skill of working with clay slabs to make ceramics. This is a unique skill that differs from general hand-building with coils/pinch pots. This process allows for a much sharper appearance in the finished product.

Your works will be taken away for firing and will be ready for collection from artisan within two weeks.

We provide:

A handout with pictures of how to roll out the slabs of clay and a short description of how to attach slabs together.
Pre-rolled clay slabs out that have been dried to the appropriate consistency.
Tea, coffee and snacks

What to bring:

Clothes that can get dirty (aprons will be provided as a safety measure)
Closed in shoes and your imagination!

About Tom Summers:

Tom Summers is a ceramicist that has been practising since 2018. His specialty is in hand-building, using a combination of moulds, coiling and slab building to create vessels with a signature architectural style.

Spending the last three years in Brisbane, he has quietly gathered a following that has led him to being stocked in specialty boutiques and gallery stores both at home and interstate. From 2022, Tom Summers is expanding his practice by being part of the prestigious Jam Factory Associate’s Program in Adelaide.

This workshop is an event developed for the Asia Pacific Architecture Festival 2022, an initiative of Architecture Media and State Library of Queensland.

Workshop Cancellation Policy:

Please note this workshop can be cancelled by artisan due to unforeseen circumstances or if minimum numbers are not reached. In this event participants will be refunded accordingly and as soon as possible.

Participant Cancellation Policy:

Workshops have limited spaces and involve preparation by the facilitator.

Bookings cancelled up to one week prior to the start of the workshop may be refunded, but a 20% non-refundable administration fee will be deducted.

Bookings cancelled within a week of the workshop commencing will NOT be refunded.

You are welcome to transfer your booking to another person prior to the workshop commencing. Please confirm this arrangement in writing to workshop@artisan.org.au.
