Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary - Scientific Expedition Group adventures and discoveries with Bob and Annette Vincent.
Event description
Located 600km north of Adelaide in the ruggedly spectacular northern Flinders Ranges, the 610sq km multi award-winning Wilderness Sanctuary was founded by the Sprigg family in 1968 and continues to operate to this day with a strong emphasis on science, education and conservation.
Robert (Bob) Vincent is Professor Emeritus, Physics, School of Science, Engineering and Technology, University of Adelaide. Annette Vincent is a scientist and artist who learnt to draw during her Biological Sciences degree at Canterbury University NZ.
Scientific Expedition Group (SEG) is a voluntary organization founded 40 years ago which runs several biodiversity surveys each year. Volunteers collect and study a range of mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and also record the vegetation and surrounding geology.
In their presentation Bob and Annette will describe two bio-diversity surveys undertaken in the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary under two different conditions: in 2009 after a nine-year drought and in 2011 after a two-year wet. The 2009 survey was organized because there had not been a biodiversity survey at this location. Scientific data was needed as evidence to preserve Arkaroola as a Wildlife Sanctuary safe from mining activities. Thanks to many people, the Arkaroola Wildlife Sanctuary is now under “Protective Legislation” which went through the South Australian Parliament in April 2012. Annette captured the landscape surrounding the Arkaroola survey sites in a range of sketches and published with her reports in The South Australian Naturalist
The presentation will be augmented by survey equipment and preserved invertebrate samples. Annette will also display a selection of her Arkaroola artwork.
