Art as Resistance and Protest - No More Silence, Prevent Sexual Violence!

Art as resistance. Art as protest. Art as action.

Join BRISSC, Ya'djin Women's Collective and What Were You Wearing Australia for an evening of survivor-created art, resistance and discussion as part of Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

We believe creativity can be a powerful tool for resistance. Through art, storytelling and collective action, we can challenge harmful narratives, disrupt silence, demand accountability and create space for conversations about what needs to change. This is a night to celebrate survivor strength and resilience and come together as a community to challenge the silence and stigma surrounding sexual violence and talk about pathways of healing through art.

This years theme is No More Silence, Prevent Sexual Violence! For too long, survivors have been asked to carry the weight of sexual violence quietly and individually- to stay silent, to move on, and to make ourselves comfortable for everyone else. This night we come together to share our stories loudly and to see the strength in each and every one of us.

A breakdown of what to expect:

🎨 Artwork from:

• Ya'djin Women's Collective and women who have been involved with the collective

• Survivors connected with BRISSC from a series of workshops that were run this year on the same theme

• An installation by What Were You Wearing featuring replica outfits based on real stories shared by survivors of sexual assault.

🎤 A panel discussion exploring art as resistance, protest and healing by survivors
🎶 Music and opportunities to dance, as well as softer places with couches and areas to reflect
🍴 Delicious food by donation and drinks available to purchase
❤️ Community, connection and collective care. BRISSC will have support workers available on the night to talk with anyone.

VENUE ACCESS

The exhibition will be held at VENTspace in South Brisbane. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Access from the street is via a flat, wide curb ramp. The street, footpath and access path to the venue have a slight gradient.

BATHROOMS

There are 3x gender-neutral toilets in the venue, all of which are accessible without steps. However, the venue does not have a wheelchair accessible toilets, as there is a tight internal corner that may be difficult to navigate in a wheelchair. The nearest fully wheelchair accessible toilet are the public toilets on Grey St or Musgrave Park. We deeply apologise for any inconvenience caused.

GETTING THERE - DRIVING & PARKING

Accessible Parking Spaces

A very limited number of accessible parking spaces can be made available directly in front of the venue upon request — please contact us when booking your ticket to reserve a space.

General Parking Spaces

The nearest parking is at Juggera Hall carpark or there is limited street parking availabile in the surrounding streets. There is a paid public carpark in the Brisbane Convention Centre, approximately 300m away.

Bus

VENTspace is close to both the Cultural Centre (800m) and South Bank (750m) bus stations. The nearest on street bus stop is on Cordelia Street, which services routes 100, 107, 130, 150, 202, and 555.

Train

The nearest train station is South Brisbane station, approximately 650m away.

🎟️ Ticket sales will be split between supporting services, with the hope of funding more loud, disruptive and survivor-centred events like this one.
