Art, Beauty & Meaning
Description
Why does art matter?
Across history, human beings have made paintings, songs, stories, dances, buildings, films, poems, gardens, rituals, and images — not just to survive, but to express, remember, question, grieve, celebrate, provoke, and make sense of life.
But what is art actually for?
In this Bacchus Marsh Philosophy Club session, we’ll ask:
How do art and beauty help us understand what life means?
Together, we’ll explore questions such as:
What makes something beautiful?
Does art need to have meaning?
Can art reveal truths that ordinary language cannot?
Is beauty personal, cultural, or universal?
Should art comfort us, challenge us, disturb us — or simply be enjoyed?
As always, no prior knowledge of philosophy is needed. The session will be friendly, structured, and discussion-based. We are not here to win the argument — we are here to explore the question together.
Come along if you enjoy good questions, thoughtful conversation, and hearing how other people see the world.
