Description

Can we really become better versions of ourselves?

Many of us carry a sense that we could grow: become braver, wiser, kinder, stronger, more disciplined, more honest, or more at peace with ourselves. But personal growth is not always simple.

Sometimes the very thing we need to overcome is not outside us, but within us: fear, resentment, comfort, habit, self-deception, or old ideas about who we are.

In this Bacchus Marsh Philosophy Club session, we’ll ask:

What does it mean to overcome yourself?

Together, we’ll explore questions such as:

  • Is personal growth about becoming who we truly are, or becoming someone new?

  • Can struggle make us better?

  • When does self-improvement become self-rejection?

  • Do we need discipline, freedom, love, suffering, honesty — or all of them — to grow?

  • How do we know whether we are genuinely changing?

As always, no prior knowledge of philosophy is needed. The session will be friendly, structured, and discussion-based. We are not here to win the argument — we are here to explore the question together.

Come along if you enjoy good questions, thoughtful conversation, and hearing how other people see the world.
