ABOUT THE ARTIST
Catherine Fitz-Gerald is a multidisciplinary South Australian artist recognised for her masterful skills in handling light and luminous colours. Her practice uses traditional oil painting, abstractions, installation and video. Catherine has also independently published three limited-edition art books as outcomes of residencies or exhibitions.
An award-winning artist, Catherine has participated in and curated group and solo exhibitions with great success in both non-traditional and gallery spaces. Her work can be found in private collections throughout Australia, USA, Malaysia, Europe and New Zealand.
For over a decade, Catherine has photographed wine grape varietals throughout the seasons in Fleurieu Peninsular, Adelaide Hills, Barossa and Clare Valleys, trying to capture the life of the vines before you get a harvest.
These images have inspired realistic paintings, abstractions based on light, Transpositions, and then a new series, Bud Burst, focused on the beginning of the growing season and the details of the alien silk cocoons that are bud swell. Tiny, vibrant splashes of colour against deeply textural trunks.
Her latest works explore the beginning of vintage, reimaging the taste profiles of grape varieties, as described by vintners, in complex layers of abstract colour.
