Lumen Printing with Cecilia Montalvo and Charlie McCullers

Lumens, or sun prints, are created from the interaction of sunlight, object, and paper to create an unpredictable as well as colorful visual of shapes. Discover the magic of capturing your own images using the sun’s UV rays in this hands-on experience with artists and 2024 Brush of Excellence Environmental Art Award recipients Cecilia Montalvo and Charlie McCullers.

Participants will be introduced to alternative photographic techniques and guided through the creation of their own unique designs on light-sensitive paper.

About the Artists
Charlie McCullers and Cecilia Montalvo are a collaborative team working in alternative photographic processes. This collaboration is about the condition of permanent change, as evinced by the dynamic nature of South Florida’s barrier islands, Ebenezer Creek, Georgia, and the other places where they work. It’s built on shared thematic and process interests. In their own ways, Charlie and Cecilia each work on the meaning of divided origins, and how mythologies of belonging operate. They are based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Charlie is a native Georgian and life-long working photographer. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA, and the Savannah College of Art and Design with an MA, prior to completing his MFA. Cecilia was born and raised in Miami. She graduated from the University of Virginia, and completed her MFA at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She worked at The Phillips Collection, Smithsonian Magazine, and for Harvard University at Dumbarton Oaks, in Washington, DC.
