Event description

What is an artist book?

An artist’s book is a medium of artistic expression that uses the form or function of the “book” as inspiration. Artists’ books embrace a range of approaches often experimenting with different materials to offer new ideas and interpretations of the world.

Workshop with Julie Williams

Thursday 2 May, 1 - 3pm at Manly Library in the Creative Library.

Join artist Julie Williams as she demonstrates how to make a cut and fold artist book. Using large sponge brushes, reed pens and balsa wood with a selection of colours, you will create a background inspired by our natural environment. As an artist and calligrapher, Julie uses words extensively in her arts practice, and she will show you ways to use gestural movements, using words as a foundation, to create abstract calligraphy.

Julie will demonstrate how to make a reed pen from reeds collected locally and you will be able to try out both a pointed and flat edge reed pen. She will share helpful hints on using handwriting in your artist book.

Limited spaces, bookings essential.

This workshop is suitable for beginners.

All materials are provided. You are welcome to bring along any additional brushes or pencils to use.
