Artist in Residence Angie Goto showing 'Vital Signs" as part of the Red Rattler Future Communities Arts Program
Event description
Vital Signs by Angie Goto
Vital Signs is a Deaf-led artistic event that invites both D/deaf, hard of hearing and hearing audiences to celebrate Deaf culture in an innovative and inclusive space. It's set to be an unforgettable experience that opens new pathways for connection and understanding.
Angie Goto is an artist with a unique sensory perspective of the world around her. The languages of colour, shape, movement, and gesture are pivotal to her artistic expression and form the foundation of how she communicates through both figurative and abstract art. Born Deaf, Angie has an insight into the world that many others do not.
Vital Signs is the result of her Red Rattler Artist in Residency, a highly experimental growth of her practice as she integrates live performance and interactive technology with her painting. Vital Signs explores themes of self-expression, identity, communication, bravery, and Deaf rights, delving into the profound connection between personal experience and collective voice.
Part One: For the exhibition performance at the beginning of the event, Angie is collaborating with artist Jamaica Moana, whose movement practice draws on histories of resilience, to create a live performance. The performance will be further opened up with her collaboration with interactive technology artist Vivienne Linsley, who will work with Angie and Jamaica using biofeedback technology. Vivienne will capture Jamaica's internal physiological responses in real-time—her heart rate, blood flow, breath, and muscle movement—and translate these into a stylized vibrational soundscape. "Sound is a vibrational wave—it can be experienced in many different ways" - Vivienne.
Jamaica’s emotional and physiological experiences will be woven into the paintings themselves.
Part Two: Following the Vital Signs exhibition performance, the event will feature a vibrant showcase of visual vernacular artists. Performances to be announced soon!
