Event description

Four exceptional artists are hosting four different workshops at the same time: learn how to paint a pysanka, weave an arm band, try casting pieces of fruit and practice peg knitting.

Drop by MPavilion Parkville from 11am to 3pm daily

  • Tuesday 1 October
  • Wednesday 2 October
  • Wednesday 3 October

This bundle of workshops is all about sharing in the rich cultural and social significance of craft. It’s a great chance to connect the dots between different ideas and meet new people. Everyone is welcome.

Meet the artists:

Kiera Brew Kurec works with ideas of transformation and ritual, drawing on their Ukrainian heritage. Kiera grew up making pysanky with their family and will step you through using a tool called kistka and beeswax to write on the eggshells. Learn this traditional technique to better understand Ukrainian culture at a time when it’s under threat. You are welcome to visit the exhibition of Kiera’s work (alongside artist Eva Abinga) currently on view at the Ukrainian Museum of Australia in North Melbourne.

Cassie Leatham is a master weaver from the Taungurung/Dja Dja Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. Join Cassie to learn how to make an arm band using native pandanas and flax leaves. Find out more about Aboriginal culture and its history.

Nathan Beard draws from his Australian-Thai heritage to play with the complexities surrounding ideas of authenticity, especially when speaking about cultural identities of people from diasporic communities. Nathan will take you through the steps of silicone casting using fruits common to Thailand. Explore how artwork inspired by traditional food can express pride and tell stories about cultures.

Phil Ferguson, better known as ChiliPhilly, is a global crochet sensation. Phil exhibited their wearable art around the world, appeared on TV, radio and now even hosts thier own TV show – ‘Chill With Phill’. Phil is going to teach you peg knitting – a technique that can be used to create... anything!
