Careful Creature is a short animation by Grace Herrmann and Ancient Monkey. It blends Herrmann’s textural paper carvings with Ancient Monkey’s animation and filmmaking expertise.

Influenced by stop-motion and shadow puppetry, the animation mimics hand-manoeuvred movements on a theatre-like stage, highlighting the human element. Drawing from Gothic, Romantic, and Sublime genres, it emphasises emotional drama and the vulnerability of figures within vast, uncontrollable landscapes.

About the artist:

R|Artist Residency: Sub Tropic current artist in residence is contemporary artist Grace Herrmann whose main medium is paper carving. She cuts and peels away layers of thick paper board to create intricate, low relief artworks, building them up with shellac and inks to create lush, textural surfaces that reflect light to reveal semi-transparent layers.

Through this residency and in collaboration with Brisbane-based design agency Ancient Monkey, Grace has been exploring the potential to use technology and digital animation to create new forms of work based on her paper carving.
