    Event description

    Artist Talk: 2PM - 3PM

    Exhibition Dates: 21 October - 3 December 2023

Join artists Julie Gough and Nicole Chaffey in an intimate walkthrough as they discuss the research and development of their respective solo exhibitions, Disclosure and feral. Each artist will host a tour of their exhibition, answering questions along the way as they explain major themes and discoveries unearthed in the conceptualisation and production of their shows.

    Disclosure:
    Julie Gough

Julie Gough presents Disclosure, developed in response to her first visit to the Hunter region 18 months ago. Transglobal stories of surveillance, dispossession, loss and return drawn from historic sources are re-articulated through video, installation and archival media. The highly charged spaces and cells of the former Newcastle Police Station and lock up (1861-1982) work to amplify trace-residues of subsumed stories that are otherwise rarely encountered.

    feral: Nicole Chaffey

feral is the coming to terms with the harsh and heartbreaking reality of inheritance. Compelled to investigate long held family lore to uncover the true story behind her fleeter heritage, Chaffey discovered a much darker history of a lifetime of heinous acts, which left an indelible mark on the generations of women who followed. Eerily, and with uncanny timing, she unearthed a direct link to her ancestor, who was an inmate for a time, in The Lock-Up’s own cells. Working across her familiar medium of abstract, yet representational, landscapes, Chaffey also delves into new ceramic works, presented in The Lock-Up’s front galleries.

This is a free event, however spaces are limited. Please RSVP.
