    Event description

One of Canberra's most beloved singer-songwriters is leaving town!

    Kim Yang
is a Taiwanese-Australian singer-songwriter, her ethereal voice, evocative lyrics and soothing instrument fingerpicking capture the attention of passers-by.

Kim has supported and shared the stage with ARIA awarded artists including Katie Noonan, Josh Pyke, Ben Lee, Kate Ceberano and Fanny Lumsden. She is a regular at big gigs and festivals, including the National Folk Festival and Sydney Folk Festival this year.

Since 2019 Kim has released two EPs, one live album and received various grants from artsACT, including to produce her upcoming new project. Her music has been aired regularly on Double J radio and premiered on triple J.

This year Kim has been nominated as Artist of the Year by MusicACT and performed at the Australian of the Year ACT Awards ceremony.

Kim is currently expanding her skills as a songwriter and a home producer since receiving two arts grants from artsACT. She has been co-writing with various artists, including Katie Wighton (All Our Exes lives in Texas) and working on a few self-produced songs for her upcoming release in 2023.

In this special in-conversation style event, Upbeat's founder, Ruth O'Brien, will talk with Kim about what she's learned in recent years about how to build a career in music being based in Canberra. The chat will cover a mix of insights around songwriting, marketing yourself as an artist, building your audience and practical tips for next steps in your career as an independent artist. There will also be a Q & A at the end and a chance to mingle and meet others in music in Canberra.

Make sure not to miss out on this exclusive event with the beautiful, Kim Yang.

    About Upbeat CBR

Upbeat CBR is a new, Canberra-based social enterprise. Our key mission is to help musicians and industry workers, both in Canberra and around Australia, gain business and marketing skills to further their careers in music. We do this through artist talks, workshops, masterclasses and online groups. To stay up-to-date with news and opportunities, be sure to follow us on Instagram and sign up to the mailing list here. Upbeat was founded in 2020 by Canberra singer-songwriter, Ruth O'Brien, as a fortnightly newsletter for the Canberra music scene to help support people in music throughout the pandemic.

It is the ambition of Upbeat to shine a light on some of the barriers in the music industry for people of marginalised backgrounds. We aim to make all Upbeat events, programs, workshops and resources inclusive and accessible to everyone.

Upbeat CBR acknowledges the land on which we gather belongs to its traditional owners, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. This was, and always will be, Aboriginal Land.
