Join a panel of contemporary artists Dr Betty Sargeant, Ming Liew and Dr Jonathan Homsey with moderator Ben Keenan as they discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and its use as part of their creative process. Rather than a replacement of creativity, artists explore AI as a tool, collaborator and conceptual medium. Hear about each artists’ practice and creative approaches.

About
Ming Liew / Artist
Ming Liew is an artist-researcher based in Naarm (Melbourne). His practice spans moving image, experimental film, and archival research, examining Chinese diasporic identity across cultures, ideologies, and histories. His work has been exhibited at NGV Melbourne Design Week, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Footscray Community Arts, Blindside ARI, and MARS Gallery. He has received several awards, including first prize in the fortyfivedownstairs Emerging Artist Award and the Ignition Prize from the National Association for the Visual Arts. Ming has been an Artistic Director at Blindside ARI since 2024. He is currently a creative resident at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.
Dr Betty Sargeant / Artist
Dr Betty Sargeant (she/they) is an internationally acclaimed media artist whose large-scale immersive installations and public art address the fundamental issues of our time. She has been commissioned by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Karachi Biennale and Asia Culture Centre South Korea, where her work is held in permanent collections. In 2016 she created a multi-award-winning interactive installation featuring an automated early AI-system that made creative determinations, ACT Festival, South Korea. She has since designed the AI-robot "Betty Sargeant AI” through which she explores digital impersonation. She has won Good Design and Premier’s Design awards and is an expert in media art and digital futures.
Dr Jonathan Homsey / Artist
Dr. Jonathan ‘Jonni’ Homsey has championed street dance culture since 2002. Born in Hong Kong and raised in the USA, his accolades include the 2013 Melbourne Fringe Award for Best Emerging Producer, the 2021 Green Room Award for Best Dance Production for I Am Maggie, the 2022 Melbourne Fringe Director’s Choice, and the 2024 City of Melbourne Arts & Heritage Collection Residency. As an emerging academic, Jonni researches choreographic empowerment and his philosophy of Soft Participation.
Ben Keenan / Moderator
Ben Keenan is strategist, technologist, filmmaker and founder of ThirtySixPercent. Ben reshapes how technology influences behaviour — from TAC’s culture-shifting phone-safety films to pioneering AI boundaries in creative practice, experimental storytelling, and new formats like AI-enabled game shows exploring human–machine tension.
